En un viaje por barco donde van contadas personas, la primera noche de haber zarpado desaparece un pasajero ¿Cuál sería tu reacción? Posteriormente aparecen prendas del desaparecido llenas de sangre ¿Qué harías?

Los recuerdos de aquel primer encuentro volvieron y se desvanecieron en un instante, en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, pero con absoluta nitidez.

En la penumbra del pasillo inferior del Barnacla Cariblanca, Fidelma tenía ante sí a un hombre alto, alumbrado por un farol oscilante, y sintió un conflicto de emociones arrollador. Apenas si había reparado en que iba ataviado con hábito. Estaba de pie en el umbral de su camarote, balanceándose con una mano apoyada en el marco de la puerta; sobre su hermoso rostro bailaban las sombras proyectadas por el vaivén del farol.

Le pareció mayor, más maduro, si bien sus rasgos apenas habían cambiado. De hecho, los años habían concedido más carácter a unas facciones delicadas y hermosas y, aunque le fastidiaba reconocerlo, habían acentuado su encanto.

—¡Fidelma! —exclamó con entusiasmo—. Pero ¿qué haces aquí? ¡No me lo puedo creer!

Habría sido tan fácil responder a aquella soberbia sonrisa. Resistió a la tentación unos instantes hasta que logró mantener su rostro inexpresivo. Fue un alivio comprobar que era capaz de mantener el control de sus emociones.

—Es una sorpresa verte aquí, Cian —respondió en un tono comedido, y añadió—: ¿Qué haces tú en un barco de peregrinos?

Y al preguntarlo advirtió de pronto que iba vestido con un hábito de lana marrón y llevaba al cuello un crucifijo colgado de una correa de piel.

Cian parpadeó ante el tono frío y circunspecto de su voz, que le hizo echarse atrás y forzar luego una sonrisa. Una expresión amarga impregnó sus facciones, distorsionando su hermosura.

—Estoy en un barco de peregrinos sencillamente porque soy un peregrino.

Fidelma lo miró con sarcasmo.

Sor Fidelma es un personaje ficticio creado por el historiador y escritor inglés Peter Tremayne. Ella es la protagonista de una serie de relatos detectivescos, policiales con base histórica. Sor Fidelma es abogada (o “dalaigh”, en irlandés) y también religiosa de la antigua Iglesia celta.

Fidelma resuelve crímenes y misterios junto a su compañero (casi sentimental) el Hermano Eadulf, un monje sajón.

Las historias de esta religiosa están enmarcadas a mediados del siglo VII, especialmente en Irlanda.

En esta ocasión, la novela se ubica a finales del año 666 y sor Fidelma hace una peregrinación por lo que viaja a la península Ibérica junto a Eadulf. La compañía de su viaje es un grupo bastante heterogéneo de fieles religiosos.

La noche de haber zarpado su barco, el Barnacla Cariblanca, desaparece un peregrino y, como es sabido, nadie tiene conocimiento del hecho. Fidelma tiene la tarea de resolver esta preocupante situación antes que ésta se agrave y alguien más tenga el mismo destino.

Ella necesita plantearse ciertas preguntas que le ayuden a desenmarañar el asunto: ¿Acaso alguien mató al peregrino y luego lanzó el cuerpo por la borda? Y, en tal caso, ¿Por qué lo hizo? Y ¿Quién lo hizo?

Una novela interesante, a veces compleja y con la mezcla de varias sub-tramas.

On a boat trip where there are few people, the first night of sailing a passenger disappears. What would be your reaction? Later, bloodstained clothes of the missing person appear. What would you do?

The memories of that first meeting came back and vanished in an instant, in the blink of an eye, but with absolute clarity. In the half—light of the lower corridor of the Barnacla Cariblanca, Fidelma had a tall man in front of her, lit by a swaying lantern, and felt an overwhelming emotion. I had hardly noticed that he was dressed in a habit. He was standing on the threshold of his cabin, swinging with one hand on the doorframe; on his beautiful face danced the shadows cast by the swaying of the lantern. He seemed older, more mature, though his features had hardly changed. In fact, the years had given more character to delicate and beautiful features, and although it annoyed him to admit it, they had accentuated his charm. —Fidelma! —he exclaimed enthusiastically. But what are you doing here? I can believe it! It would have been so easy to respond to that superb smile. He resisted the temptation for a few moments until he managed to keep his face expressionless. It was a relief to see that he was able to keep control of his emotions. —It's a surprise to see you here, Cyan, —he replied in a measured tone, adding—: What are you doing on a pilgrim ship? And when she asked, she suddenly noticed that he was dressed in a brown woollen habit and wore a crucifix around his neck on a leather strap. Cyan blinked at the cool, circumspect tone of her voice, which made him back off and then force a smile. A bitter expression permeated his features, distorting his beauty. —I am on a pilgrim ship simply because I am a pilgrim. Fidelma looked at him with sarcasm.

Sister Fidelma is a fictional character created by the English historian and writer Peter Tremayne. She is the protagonist of a series of detective, police stories, with a historical basis. Sister Fidelma is a lawyer (or "dalaigh" in Irish) and also a religious of the ancient Celtic Church.

Fidelma solves crimes and mysteries together with her (almost sentimental) partner Brother Eadulf, a Saxon monk.

The stories of this nun are defined in the middle of the VII century, especially in Ireland.

On this occasion, the novel is set at the end of year 666 and Sister Fidelma makes a pilgrimage, so she travels to the Iberian Peninsula together with Eadulf. The rest of travelers of this journey is a rather heterogeneous group of religious people.

The night when the ship, Barnacla Cariblanca, left the coasts, a pilgrim disappears and, as it’s known, no one is aware of this event. Fidelma has as task of solving this worrying situation before it gets worse and someone else has the same fate.

She needs to ask herself certain questions to help her unravel the situation: Did someone kill the pilgrim and then throw the body overboard? And, if so, why did he/she do it? And who did it?

An interesting novel, sometimes complex and with a mixture of several sub-plots.
