EL GOLEM

Si en tus manos estuviera la posibilidad de moldear un ser animado artificial y, aún más, si le pudieses otorgar cualidades a ese ser ¿Cuál sería la primera de las cualidades que le darías? ¿Con qué propósitos usarías ese ser?

Una historia escrita usando un género fantástico, redactada entre 1913 y 1914, ambientada en los callejones estrechos y lúgubres de Praga e inspirándose en una leyenda judía relacionada con la Cábala, el escritor austríaco Gustav Meyrink presenta esta inigualable novela en la cual resultaba posible insuflar vida a una figura de barro mediante una clave o ciertas palabras mágicas; esto es lo que hace Atanasius Pernath en un barrio judío de Praga.

El creador del Golem, Pernath, logra llenar de vida a este ser cuando pone en éste una palabra. Según la leyenda, el Gólem cobra vida al grabar en la frente la palabra hebrea «Emeth» (verdad). Estando en este estado, éste ser ejecutaba todo tipo de trabajos. Sin embargo, el Golem entraba en un “estado de reposo” siempre que le era suprimida la primera letra que tenía en la frente, convirtiéndose en «meth» (muerte).

El juego de distintos planos y realidades, la presencia de una atmósfera onírica puede hacer que esta novela sea por momentos pesada y densa, aún así, estos aspectos siguen resaltando su grandiosidad.

SUEÑO

La luz de la luna cae al pie de mi cama y se queda ahí como una piedra grande, luminosa y lisa.

Cuando la luna llena empieza a encogerse y su lado derecho a declinar, como un rostro que se aproxima a la vejez, mostrando primero arrugas en una mejilla y demacrándose después, entonces, a esa hora de la noche, se apodera de mí una inquietud sombría y angustiosa.

No estoy dormido ni despierto, y en ese ensueño se mezclan en mi alma lo que he vivido con lo que he leído y escuchado, como corrientes de diferentes colores y luz que confluyeran en él.

If you have the chance to mold with your hands an artificial animated being and, even more, if you can give it some personal qualities, what would be the first quality that you give it? What purposes would you use it for?

It’s a story written with fantastic/fantasy genre, between 1913 and 1914, set in narrow and lugubrious alleys of Prague and inspired by a Jewish mystical legend related to the Kabbalah. The Austrian author Gustav Meyrink presents this incomparable story which it’s possible to insufflate life to a clay figure using one or some magical keywords; that’s what Athanasius Pernath does in a Prague Jewish suburb.

The Golem’s creator, Pernath, achieves to give life to this being when he uses a word. According to the legend, the Golem comes to life when the Hebrew word «Emeth» (truth) is engraved on the being’s forehead. During this “state”, the being is able to do all types of tasks. However, the Golem switches to a “resting state” when the first letter of that word is removed: «meth» (death).

This story combines different types of scenes, planes and realities. Sometimes this novel could be heavy and dense because of its oneiric influence. Even though, those aspects keep highlighting its grandeur.

SLEEP

The moonlight is shining on the foot of my bed, lying there like a large, bright, flat stone.

Whenever the disc of the full moon begins to shrink and its right-hand side starts to wither—like a face approaching old age, in which one cheek becomes hollow and wrinkled first—that is the time when at night I am seized by a dark and agonising restlessness. I am not asleep, nor am I awake, and in my reverie things I have seen mingle with things I have read or heard, like rivers of different colour or clarity meeting.
