La Historia de la filosofía es una historia en nueve volúmenes del pensamiento filosófico occidental, escrita por el jesuita inglés Frederick C. Copleston.
Esta obra abarca
desde la filosofía de los presocráticos hasta la de Dewey, Russell, Moore,
Sartre y Merleau-Ponty. Los nueve volúmenes, publicados entre 1946 y 1974,
fueron escritos para los estudiantes de seminarios católicos, con el propósito
de “brindar a los seminarios católicos eclesiásticos un trabajo que sea más
detallado y de mayor alcance que los libros de textos comúnmente usados, y que
mostrase asimismo el desarrollo lógico de los sistemas filosóficos y cómo están
interrelacionados”.
El enfoque tomista de Copleston se mantiene explícito a lo largo de la obra. Sin embargo, generalmente se acepta que describe de una manera justa y cabal a las diferentes filosofías tratadas, incluso aquellas que no comparte. De hecho, ésta es quizás la mejor y más completa historia de la filosofía occidental disponible hoy en día. Algo que puede molestar a los lectores menos doctos de Copleston son las constantes citas en griego, latín, alemán y francés, sin traducir.

Frederick Copleston (1984)
The History of Philosophy is a nine-volume history of Western philosophical thought, written by English Jesuit Frederick C. Copleston.
This work ranges from the philosophy of the pre-Socratics to that of
Dewey, Russell, Moore, Sartre and Merleau-Ponty. The nine volumes, published
between 1946 and 1974, were written for Catholic seminary students, with the
purpose of "providing Catholic ecclesiastical seminaries with a work that
is more detailed and far-reaching than the commonly used textbooks, and that
would also show the logical development of philosophical systems and how they
are interrelated."
Copleston's Thomistic approach is kept explicit throughout the work. However, it is generally accepted that he describes in a fair and thorough manner the different philosophies discussed, even those he does not share. In fact, this is perhaps the best and most complete history of Western philosophy available today. One thing that may annoy Copleston's less learned readers are the constant quotations in Greek, Latin, German, and French, untranslated.
