¿Hasta qué punto está justificada la muerte o exterminio de un grupo poblacional por el simple hecho de seguir una ideología o corriente religiosa? ¿Dicho basamento religioso tiene entonces la única y última primacía?

Lo ahorcamos delante de la catedral de Kingsbridge, el emplazamiento habitual para todas las ejecuciones; porque si no se puede colgar a un hombre ante el rostro de Dios, tal vez eso signifique que no debería estar muerto.

El sheriff lo subió desde los calabozos de la cárcel —situada bajo la casa consistorial, la antigua sede del gremio— con las manos atadas a la espalda. Caminaba erguido, con una expresión desafiante en su cara macilenta, con el gesto impávido.

La multitud vociferaba mofándose de él, maldiciéndolo entre abucheos, y aunque él parecía no verlos, sí me vio a mí: nos miramos a los ojos, y en ese efímero intercambio de miradas había una vida entera.

Yo era responsable de su muerte, y él lo sabía.

Había estado persiguiéndolo durante decenios; era un asesino que, en un acto de salvaje brutalidad, habría acabado con la vida de la mitad de los gobernantes de nuestro país, incluida la práctica totalidad de la familia real, si yo no se lo hubiera impedido.

Me he pasado la existencia yendo tras esos asesinos en potencia, y muchos de ellos han sido ejecutados, no solo en la horca, sino, además, destripados y descuartizados, la muerte más terrible, la que se reserva para los peores criminales.

Sí, he hecho esto mismo innumerables veces: ver morir a un hombre sabiendo que yo, más que ningún otro, lo había llevado ante su castigo, un castigo justo pero atroz. Lo hice por mi país, que tengo en gran estima; por Su Majestad, a quien sirvo, y por algo más, por un principio: la convicción de que una persona tiene derecho a decidir cuáles son sus creencias con respecto a Dios.

Aquel fue el último de los muchos hombres a quienes envié al infierno, pero me hizo pensar en el primero…

(PRÓLOGO).

La magnanimidad de la escritura y la genialidad de Ken Follett vuelven a fascinar y a cautivar al lector con esta tercera parte de la Saga “Los Pilares de la Tierra” la cual está ambientada aproximadamente entre el año 1558 hasta el 1606, cuando Isabel I llega al trono de Inglaterra y casi toda Europa está en su contra, quien, por tal motivo, decide organizar el primer servicio secreto del país.

El entorno de la catedral de Kingsbridge muestra una ciudad sesgada por el odio y las diferencias religiosas de la época; concretamente entre católicos y protestantes, que llevarán a grandes derramamientos de sangre, dando a lugar a una emblemática frase que reza: las peores atrocidades e inhumanidades de la historia han ocurrido en nombre de la religión y/o en nombre de Dios. Ésta podría ser la idea que mejor puede plasmar el eje central y neurálgico de esta historia.

Esta sempiterna disputa entre católicos y protestantes tiene un sello muy fuerte dentro de las páginas de este libro: saber quiénes tienen la razón, quiénes tienen la verdad absoluta, cuál de las dos es la “fe verdadera”, a quiénes mira mejor Dios.

Al mismo tiempo, esta radicalidad de pensamiento y perspectiva hace que barbaries como LA MATANZA DE LA NOCHE DE SAN BARTOLOMÉ ocurrida en Paris en la noche del 23 y 24 de Agosto de 1572 se vea reflejada en esta trama, donde ultracatólicos asesinaron en masa a «hugonotes» o protestantes franceses, con tal nivel de sanguinariedad que el lector puede llegar a pensar ¿Tal acontecimiento tan atroz ocurrió realmente? O ¿Es sólo parte del mundo de la novela de Follett?

Adicional a lo anterior y complementando lo inicial, el autor transversaliza el fundamento de espionaje y servicio secreto que crea la reina Isabel I cuando llega al trono de Europa, puesto que necesita conocer cualquier indicio de intrigas homicidas, conspiraciones, levantamientos o planes de invasión en su contra.

De manera personal, me parece que el autor le da un cierre perfecto a la saga Los Pilares de la Tierra con esta novela. Una vez más Ken Follett siguió sorprendiéndome con esta obra con una mezcla de sentimientos y emociones: suspenso, angustia, placer, alegría, dolor, frustración, rabia, entre otros, que tiene el gran número de personajes, y los cuales se desenvuelven en la Europa del siglo XVI en medio de estas dichas rivalidades político/religiosas.

Recomiendo a ojos cerrados la lectura de esta saga para aquellos que son amantes de la narrativa histórica de acción y suspense, pero sugiero leerlos en el orden que van los libros: (1) Los Pilares de la Tierra, (2) Un Mundo sin Fin y (3) Una Columna de Fuego.

How far is justified the death of a population only by following a religious trend or ideology? Does this type of thinking have the last and sole word?

We hanged him in front of Kingsbridge Cathedral. It is the usual place for executions. After all, if you can’t kill a man in front of God’s face you probably shouldn’t kill him at all.

The sherif brought him up from the dungeon below the Guild Hall, hands tied behind his back. He walked upright, his pale face defiant, fearless.

The crowd jeered at him and cursed him. He seemed not to see them. But he saw me. Our eyes met, and in that momentary exchange of looks there was a lifetime.

I was responsible for his death, and he knew it.

I had been hunting him for decades. He was a bomber who would have killed half the rulers of our country, including most of the royal family, all in one act of bloodthirsty savagery – if I had not stopped him.

I have spent my life tracking such would-be murderers, and a lot of them have been executed – not just hanged but drawn and quartered, the more terrible death reserved for the worst offenders.

Yes, I have done this many times: watched a man die knowing that I, more than anyone else, had brought him to his just but dreadful punishment. I did it for my country, which is dear to me; for my sovereign, whom I serve; and for something else, a principle, the belief that a person has the right to make up his own mind about God.

He was the last of many men I sent to hell, but he made me think of the first.

(PROLOGUE).

The magnanimity of Ken Follett's writing and genius once again fascinate and captivate the reader with this third part of "The Pillars of the Earth" Saga, which is set approximately between 1558 and 1606, when Elizabeth I comes to the throne of England and almost all of Europe is against her, who, for this reason, decides to organize the country's first secret service.

The surrounding of Kingsbridge Cathedral depicts a city torn by the hatred and religious differences of the time; specifically, between Catholics and Protestants, which will lead to great bloodshed, giving rise to an emblematic phrase that reads: the worst atrocities and inhumanities in history have occurred in the name of religion and/or in the name of God. This could be the idea that best captures the central and neuralgic axis of this story.

This everlasting dispute between Catholics and Protestants has a very strong stamp within the pages of this book: who is right, who has the absolute truth, which of the two is the "true faith", who God looks at best.

At the same time, this radicalism of thought and perspective means that barbarities such as THE SLAUGHTER OF THE NIGHT OF SAINT-BARTHOLOMÉ in Paris on the night of 23-24 August 1572 are reflected in this plot, where ultra-Catholics mass-murdered "Huguenots" or French Protestants, with such a level of bloodthirstiness that the reader is left to wonder whether such a heinous event really happened? Or is it just part of the world of Follett's novel?

In addition to the above and complementing the initial part, the author cross-cuts the foundation of espionage and secret service that Queen Elizabeth I creates when she comes to the throne of Europe, since she needs to know any sign of murderous intrigues, conspiracies, uprisings or invasion plans against her.

Personally, I think that the author gives a perfect closure to The Pillars of the Earth saga with this novel. Once again Ken Follett continued to surprise me with this work with a mixture of feelings and emotions: suspense, anguish, pleasure, joy, pain, frustration, rage, among others, that has the large number of characters, and which unfold in the Europe of the sixteenth century in the midst of these political/religious rivalries.

I highly recommend reading this saga for those who love historical action thrillers, but I suggest reading them in the order of the books: (1) The Pillars of the Earth, (2) A World Without End, and (3) A Column of Fire.
