Todo estaba como boca de lobo cuando abrió los ojos, aunque no era eso lo que la inquietaba. Sabía dónde estaba, en el priorato de Kingsbridge, en el alargado edificio de piedra al que llamaban hospital, tumbada sobre la paja que había esparcida en el suelo. Por el cálido olor lechoso que llegaba hasta ella, imaginó que su madre, que descansaba a su lado, estaría amamantando al recién nacido, al que todavía no le habían puesto nombre. A continuación yacía su padre y, al lado de éste, el hermano mayor de Gwenda, Philemon, de doce años.

El hospital estaba abarrotado y aunque no llegaba a distinguir con claridad a las otras familias que ocupaban el suelo del recinto, hacinadas como ovejas en un redil, percibía el rancio hedor que desprendían sus cálidos cuerpos. Faltaba poco para que despuntaran las primeras luces del día de Todos los Santos, fiesta de guardar que ese año además caía en domingo, por lo que sería día de especial precepto. Por consiguiente, la víspera había sido noche de difuntos, azarosa ocasión en que los espíritus malignos vagaban libremente por doquier. Cientos de personas habían acudido a Kingsbridge desde las poblaciones vecinas, igual que la familia de Gwenda, a pasar la noche en el interior de los recintos sagrados del priorato para asistir a la misa de Todos los Santos con las primeras luces del alba.

De nuevo la pluma de Ken Follett nos vuelve a deslumbrar con esta gran obra, la cual representa la segunda parte de la novela “Los Pilares de la Tierra”. Han pasado 200 años y la espléndida catedral gótica de Kingsbridge ya se encuentra en completo funcionamiento gracias al trabajo de Tom Builder y su hijo Jack Jackson, principalmente. Hasta ahora, de ellos, sólo parece haber quedado el recuerdo de su insigne construcción.

“Un Mundo Sin Fin” viene a abrazar dos escenarios que fueron importantes en la historia anterior: la Catedral y el Priorato de Kingsbridge. Estas dos locaciones serán los lugares donde mejor se entrecruzarán el amor, el odio, el orgullo, la codicia, la intriga, los asesinatos, la hambruna, las guerras, en medio de un acontecimiento significativo de este período: la Peste Negra; una de las pandemias más devastadoras de la historia de la humanidad y que aniquiló a la mitad de la población europea.

Esta historia se sitúa en el siglo XIV y abarca un período de 34 años comprendidos entre 1327 y 1361, casi finales de la Edad Media. Muchos de los personajes presentes son descendientes de la generación de “Los Pilares de la Tierra”. Dentro de estos años, Follet trata de mostrar, entre otras cosas, la importancia comercial que tuvo la manufactura y venta de la lana, no solo en Kingsbridge, sino en otras partes de Inglaterra y Europa.

Una novela llena de romances, odios, amarguras, envidias, sentimientos encontrados, luchas de poder entre la nobleza y el clero, serán unos de los ingredientes más resaltantes de esta fascinante trama, que, de seguro, seguirá dejando al lector atrapado desde la primera hasta la última página.

Can a pandemic be considered a divine punishment, a revelation or a sign? Is it fair to judge and condemn those who caused such a plague?

Gwenda was eight years old, but she was not afraid of the dark.

When she opened her eyes she could see nothing, but that was not what scared her. She knew where she was. She was at Kingsbridge Priory, in the long stone building they called the hospital, lying on the floor in a bed of straw. Her mother lay next to her, and Gwenda could tell, by the warm milky smell, that Ma was feeding the new baby, who did not yet have a name. Beside Ma was Pa, and next to him Gwenda’s older brother, Philemon, who was twelve.

The hospital was crowded, and though she could not see the other families lying along the floor, squashed together like sheep in a pen, she could smell the rank odour of their warm bodies. When dawn broke it would be All Hallows, a Sunday this year and therefore an especially holy day. By the same token the night before was All Hallows’ Eve, a dangerous time when evil spirits roamed freely. Hundreds of people had come to Kingsbridge from the surrounding villages, as Gwenda’s family had, to spend Halloween in the sanctified precincts of the priory, and to attend the All Hallows service at daybreak.

Once again Ken Follett's pen dazzles us with this great work, which represents the second part of the novel "The Pillars of the Earth". Two hundred years have passed and the splendid gothic cathedral of Kingsbridge is now in full operation thanks to the work of Tom Builder and his son Jack Jackson, mainly. Until now, only the memory of their famous construction seems to have remained.

"World Without End" comes to embrace two scenarios that were important in previous story: the Kingsbridge’s Cathedral and Priory. These two locations will be the places where love, hate, pride, greed, intrigue, murder, famine, and war will best intertwine in the midst of a significant event of this period: the Black Death; one of the most devastating pandemics in human history and which wiped out half the European population.

This story develops in the 14th century and covers a period of 34 years between 1327 and 1361, almost the end of the Middle Ages. Many of the characters are descendants of “The Pillars of the Earth” generation. Within these years, Follet tries to show, among other things, the commercial importance that the manufacture and sale of wool had, not only in Kingsbridge, but in other parts of England and Europe.

A novel full of romance, hatred, bitterness, envy, mixed feelings, power struggles between the nobility and the clergy, will be one of the most outstanding ingredients of this fascinating plot, which will surely continue to keep the reader trapped from the first to the last page.
