¿Qué tanto eres capaz de hacer con tal de alcanzar el sueño de tu vida? ¿Qué cosas dejarías de lado para ello?

Los chiquillos llegaron temprano para el ahorcamiento.
Todavía estaba oscuro cuando los tres o cuatro primeros se escurrieron con cautela de las covachas, sigilosos como gatos, con sus botas de fieltro. El pequeño pueblo aparecía cubierto por una ligera capa de nieve reciente, como si le hubiesen dado una nueva mano de pintura y sus huellas fueron las primeras en manchar su inmaculada superficie. Se encaminaron a través de las arracimadas chozas de madera y a lo largo de las calles de barro helado hasta la silenciosa plaza del mercado donde esperaba la horca.
Los muchachos aborrecían todo aquello que sus mayores estimaban. Despreciaban la belleza y se burlaban de la bondad. Se morían de risa a la vista de un lisiado y si topaban con un animal herido lo mataban a pedradas. Alardeaban de heridas y mostraban orgullosos sus cicatrices, reservando una admiración para cuando de una mutilación se trataba. Un chico al que le faltara un dedo podía llegar a ser un rey. Amaban la violencia, podían recorrer kilómetros para presenciar derramamientos de sangre y jamás se perdían una ejecución.

Los Pilares de la Tierra representa la primera novela de una trilogía histórica del gran maestro de la narrativa y el suspense, el británico Ken Follett, la cual está ambientada en Inglaterra en el siglo XII, en plena Edad Media.

Esta historia comienza con la vida de uno de los personajes principales llamado Tom Builder, quien se desempeñaba como albañil y que desde siempre ha tenido un sueño: ser el constructor de una catedral gótica. Al principio, parece que la suerte de Tom no se encuentra a su favor, pero luego, ve una luz de esperanza en el logro de su sueño.

Dentro de sus andanzas iniciales, Tom y su familia (Martha y Alfred, sus hijos, Ellen, su actual esposa, y Jack, hijo de Ellen) viajan de pueblo en pueblo buscando cumplir el sueño de su vida. Su viaje parece haber terminado al llegar a Kingsbridge, lugar donde verá una posibilidad de realizar dicho sueño. En ese sitio Tom conoce al superior del monasterio, Phillip.

Esta es una novela que, cronológicamente hablando, abarca varios años, tiempo en el cual podemos ver nacer, crecer y morir a los personajes. Esto, junto las evoluciones históricas y políticas, y descripciones constructivas y arquitectónicas, hacen que sea una narración extensa, pero al mismo tiempo sumamente emocionante.

Durante el período de duración, la historia y la familia del constructor se verán marcadas por una fuerte lucha de poderes entre cardenales, reyes y nobles, por amores, pasiones y engaños, por odios, maldiciones y muertes, por violencia, fe, sobrevivencia, entre otros.

Los Pilares de la Tierra es una novela completamente fascinante y hermosa de principio a fin, que atrapa la atención total del lector especialmente cuando las tramas de los personajes comienzan a cruzarse, esto desencadena reacciones inesperadas y sorpresivas en el lector.

Finalmente, a modo de apreciación muy personal, me fascinaron todas las páginas dedicadas a explicar aquellas técnicas constructivas, arquitectónicas y de dibujo de la época, me sentí como un aprendiz de Tom Builder en medio de un taller de enseñanza de diseño y construcción de iglesias medievales.

The small boys came early to the hanging.
It was still dark when the first three or four of them sidled out of the hovels, quiet as cats in their felt boots. A thin layer of fresh snow covered the little town like a new coat of paint, and theirs were the first footprints to blemish its perfect surface. They picked their way through the huddled wooden huts and along the streets of frozen mud to the silent marketplace, where the gallows stood waiting.
The boys despised everything their elders valued. They scorned beauty and mocked goodness. They would hoot with laughter at the sight of a cripple, and if they saw a wounded animal they would stone it to death. They boasted of injuries and wore their scars with pride, and they reserved their special admiration for mutilation: a boy with a finger missing could be their king. They loved violence; they would run miles to see bloodshed; and they never missed a hanging.

The Pillars of the Earth represents the first novel in a historical trilogy by the great master of narrative and suspense, the British Ken Follett, which is set in England in the 12th century, in the middle of the Middle Ages.

This story begins with the life of one of the main characters called Tom Builder, who worked as a bricklayer and who has always had a dream: to be the builder of a Gothic cathedral. At first, it seems that Tom's luck is not in his favor, but then, he sees a light of hope in the achievement of his dream.

In his early years, Tom and his family (Martha and Alfred, his children, Ellen, his current wife, and Jack, Ellen's son) travel from town to town seeking to fulfill his life's dream. Their journey seems to be over when they arrive in Kingsbridge, where they see a possibility of realizing that dream. There Tom meets the superior of the monastery, Phillip.

This is a novel that, chronologically speaking, covers several years, a time in which we can see the characters being born, growing up and dying. This, together with the historical and political evolutions, and constructive and architectural descriptions, makes it an extensive narrative, but at the same time extremely exciting.

During the period of duration, the history and the family of the builder will be marked by a strong power struggle between cardinals, kings and nobles, by loves, passions and deceptions, by hatreds, curses and deaths, by violence, faith, survival, among others.

The Pillars of the Earth is a completely fascinating and beautiful novel from beginning to end, which catches the reader's total attention especially when the plots of the characters start to cross, this triggers unexpected and surprising reactions in the reader.

Finally, by way of a very personal appreciation, I was fascinated by all the pages dedicated to explaining those construction, architectural and drawing techniques of the time. I felt like an apprentice of Tom Builder in the middle of a workshop teaching design and construction of medieval churches.
